Many Causes of Eye Pain

Eye pain can be due to many causes and can be of many types. Sharp pain accompanied by the feeling of having something in your eye (like a grain of sand or an eyelash) can be due to corneal problems. Pain in response to light (called “photophobia”) can be a sign of inflammation within the eye. Tenderness and swelling of the eyelid can be due to an inflammatory or infectious condition. Intense eye pain accompanied by headache or brow ache can be due to very high eye pressure, such as acute glaucoma.

The most serious causes of eye pain are those that are associated with a change in vision or that develop after trauma or use of contact lenses. Regardless of the cause, eye pain is not normal and requires prompt evaluation in our office.
